Gala Week Events 2018


Tuesday 5 June to Thursday 28 June

Friday 15 June     


Individual Fancy Dress & Small Groups

Judging at Fountain Green commencing at 6.30 pm.

Classes – Under 6 years; 6 – 8 years; 9 – 11 years; 12 – 15 years.

Prizes for Best Dressed, Most Humorous and Most Original in each class.

The best entry in all classes under 16 years of age will receive the Bill Hoggan Memorial Trophy. Adults (individual entrants or pairs) will compete for the Montgomery Trophy.

Separate award for Small Groups (any ages) 3 – 10 people.

Floats, Other Vehicles and Large Fancy Dress Groups

Judging of fancy dress groups on Fountain Green from 6.45 pm.

Vehicles participating in the parade will assemble in the driveway leading to the old Loanhead Cemetery (entering from Burghlee Terrace adjacent to Harnes Court).

Awards for groups on foot, motorised entries and for best non motorised decorated vehicle.

Special award for best entry on the move during the parade.

A popular feature of the Carnival in recent years has been the motorised section which precedes the main body of the procession. This section is expected to feature a Harley Davidson motorcycle group, Lotus owners’ group, Broadsword (preserved military vehicles) and a group of vintage and classic cars.  The vehicles in this section can be viewed in Muirfield Gardens prior to the parade moving off. Owners of preserved vehicles are invited to take part – call Alan McLaren (0131 440 3830) for more information.

Parade Route

Moving off at 7.30 pm from Church Street and proceeding by way of Clerk Street, George Drive, Kennington Avenue, McNeill Avenue and The Loan. The parade will disperse in Muirfield Gardens and the The Loan (between Muirfield Gardens and Clerk Street).

Decorated floats, smaller entries based on cars or trailers or fancy dress groups on foot are all welcome. Join in this fun event for the whole community. Sunday 17 June       


Starts from the Memorial Park. Entrants should enrol from 10.30 am. Run starts at 11.00 am. Entry is free and all participants will receive a medal. The route this year is again that based on the Memorial Park, Burghlee Park and the Park Avenue Playing Field.

Fountain Green, commencing at 2.30pm, come along and support this popular group.

Monday 18 June       


Fountain Green, commencing 6.30 pm. Come along with your dog and take part in this free and fun event.


Tuesday 19 June      


Memorial Park, commencing 6.30 pm. Free entry. Open to all boys and girls up to P7. Teams will be selected at the event with a separate section for younger children.


Wednesday 20 June


The Queen Elect and Herald will officially open the fairground at 6.00 pm and, on this opening night, members of the Gala Court will enjoy free rides courtesy of Slater’s Showtime Funfairs.


Wednesday 20 June


Fountain Green, commencing 7.00 pm and featuring Midlothian Community Concert Band. Free event although a voluntary collection will be taken for Gala funds.


Thursday 21 June    


Loanhead Miners’ Club, Main Hall, commencing 1.30 pm. Tickets £2. Available from Chrissie Rygula or Annette Perfect (0131 440 1380) or pay on the day.


Thursday 21 June   


Judging will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 22 June. All local shops and businesses are invited to decorate their premises for the Gala Week.


Saturday 23 June      CHILDREN’S DAY

The biggest day in Loanhead’s annual calendar.

8.00 am         Judging of decorated house frontages commences.

10.00 am         Collection of members of the Court from their homes commences.

10.45 am         Collection of Queen Elect from her home.

11.30 am         The various groups accompanied by the massed bands move off from St Margaret’s Hall, Clerk Street and proceed by Clerk Street and Church Street to Fountain Green.

11.45 am         Crowning Ceremony on Fountain Green. This will be followed by the Mining Memorial Ceremony.

1.00 pm         The Grand Procession moves off from Church Street and makes its way around the town to the Memorial Park.

1.30 pm         Commencement of Afternoon Programme of Entertainment in the Memorial Park.

2.30pm          Children’s Sports

3.00 pm         War Memorial Ceremony in the Memorial Park.

5.00 pm         Conclusion of programme of events.


The following bands will be in attendance on Children’s Day:-


A wide range of entertainment for all ages will be provided on Children’s Day, Saturday 23 June in the Memorial Park commencing at 1.30 pm. Attractions are currently expected to  include:-


The School Queen and other Court Principals will return to the Park at 3.00 pm when the Queen will lay a wreath at the War Memorial in the presence of the Standard Bearers from local Ex-Service groups and local cadet units and with a suitable musical accompaniment provided by the massed silver bands. Members of the public wishing to attend this ceremony are requested to assemble for 2.45pm.


Sunday 24 June        CHILDREN’S SPORTS

In the event that the sports scheduled for Saturday 23 June are cancelled due to inclement weather, they will be re-scheduled for Sunday 24 June in the Memorial Park at 2.00 pm.
