Street Traders

As a lot of you may have noticed over the last few years during the Gala Week particularly on the Fancy Dress night and on the Gala Day a few street traders appear selling balloons, silly string, spay hair colour and toys from pull along barrows, PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM, ESPECIALLY SILLY STRING OR SPRAY HAIR COLOUR !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This causes no end of mess in the streets  which the council have to try to clean up and can cause damage to cars paintwork if sprayed on them. We as a committee have banned these items from the Memorial Park and Fountain Green but because these people have what’s known as a Hawkers Licence they can sell this stuff at exorbitant prices and the Gala Day does not invite them or encourage them to be here. The Gala Day receives NO donation from them and nor would we want to as we feel they are way to expensive.

Please  parents do not encourage your children to buy anything from them. If anyone comes into the Memorial Park or Fountain Green at a Gala Event and they have Silly String or Spray Hair Colour they will be asked not to use it.

POP UP SHOPS

In the lead up to this year’s Gala festivities we will be operating Pop Up Shops where you will be able to obtain:-

WRISTBAND SCHEME

Last year we introduced a Wristband Scheme in the Memorial Park for the afternoon of Children’s Day. This proved to be hugely popular. We are therefore continuing with the Wristband Scheme this year and indeed are considerably expanding the scheme to include no less than 25 attractions which will operate from 1.30 pm to 5.00 pm.

Wristbands will be on sale in the park from 1.30 pm and will cost £7.00 on the day or £5.00 through vouchers purchased in advance. Children taking part in the Grand Procession with advance purchase vouchers will be able to exchange these vouchers for wristbands in the assembly area for the procession. This will allow these children to avoid any queuing to obtain wristbands in the park and permit them to access attractions immediately they enter the park after the parade.

Please note, to take account of the capacity of attractions and to avoid lengthy queues, there is a maximum as regards the number of wristbands available. Advance purchase is therefore highly recommended, to save money and to avoid disappointment. In addition there will also be a number of attractions for the free use of children attending the Sports on the afternoon of Friday 26 June.

NO FRIDAY MORNING SCHOOLS’ EVENT THIS YEAR

Regrettably we are unable to stage the Friday morning Schools’ Procession and the Joint Schools’ Assembly this year (although the Friday afternoon Sports will continue as normal). A few other events which have formed part of the Gala Week in recent years will also not take place this year.

Due to the small size of the Committee, a general lack of volunteers and additional obligations being imposed upon organisers of events of this nature, the Committee has had to take some tough decisions. We have decided to concentrate the available volunteer time and resources on the core events of the Carnival Parade and the Children’s Day. These events will be maintained at the scale and to the standard of previous years.

We hope that more volunteers will come forward to join either the Committee or the Community Events Support Team to allow the full programme of events to be reinstated in future years. We do still need additional volunteers for this year’s events. Please refer to the separate item providing further information on the Community Events Support Team. If you can assist with any of the tasks listed, please come forward and offer your help.

Carnival Parade 2014 – A great evening

The 2014 Carnival Parade took place last night on a beautiful dry evening.  A superb turn out from the local groups filled Fountain Green prior to the parade for the judging (Results to be posted.  They then joined on foot and on some superbly decorated floats.

Our now regular bikers followed by Vintage Cars and Lotus sports cars lead the parade out from Fountain Place.  The noise and plethora of vehicles set the scene for the rest of the parade.  Pipe Bands, Samba Band, Brass Bands and Thomas the Tank engine were mixed with the procession of floats.

Last but not least a classic Pontiac, Mini and military 4x4s closed up the parade.

If you enjoy the Gala Day and all the great events that are parts of it such as the Carnival Parade and Singing Kettle the future relies on the volunteers that assist.  Over recent years the numbers have dwindled to a now critical level.  Can you spare an hour, a day or a few days a year??  You can do as much or as little, it all counts.  If you can send a note via the website or grab a committee member at any of the events.  Believe it or not its great fun!
