Gala Week Events 2014

Tuesday 3 June – Thursday 3 July


A display of historic photos of Loanhead Gala will be staged in Loanhead Library during normal Library opening hours. This year’s display will feature fancy dress and Carnival Parades over the years.

Friday 20 June          


Individual Fancy Dress & Small Groups

Judging at Fountain Green commencing at 6.30 pm.

Classes – Under 6 years; 6 – 8 years; 9 – 11 years; 12 – 15 years.

Prizes for Best Dressed, Most Humorous and Most Original in each class.

The best entry in all classes under 16 years of age will receive the Bill Hoggan Memorial Trophy. Adults (individual entrants (not pairs)) will compete for the Tam Montgomery Trophy.

New award for Small Groups (any ages) 3 – 10 people.

Floats, Other Vehicles and Large Fancy Dress Groups

Judging of fancy dress groups on Fountain Green from 6.45 pm.

Vehicles participating in the parade will assemble in the driveway leading to the old Loanhead Cemetery (entering from Burghlee Terrace adjacent to Harnes Court).

New award for best non motorised decorated vehicle.

New award for best entry on the move during the parade.

A group of vintage and classic cars taking part in the parade can be viewed prior to the parade moving off.

Parade Route

Moving off at 7.30 pm from Church Street and proceeding by way of Clerk Street, George Drive, Kennington Avenue, McNeill Avenue, The Loan and Muirfield Gardens, returning to Fountain Green.

 Get Involved in this year’s Parade

Are you taking part in this year’s parade? Why not take part with your club, organisation or business or simply with a group of family, friends or neighbours? Decorated floats, smaller entries based on cars or trailers or fancy dress groups on foot are all welcome. Join in this fun event for the whole community. Whilst there is no formal entry process and it is possible to simply turn up on the night, it is helpful if we have prior notification of groups taking part.


Saturday 21 June     


Adult teams for the R L Scott Trophy. Burghlee Park, commencing 1.00 pm. Entry fee £5.00 per team. Entries accepted on the day.


Sunday 22 June       


Starts from the Memorial Park. Entrants should enrol from 10.30 am. Run starts at 11.00 am. Entry is free and all participants will receive a medal. A new route this year is based on the Memorial Park, Burghlee Park and the Park Avenue Playing Field.

Loanhead Leisure Centre All Weather Pitch, commencing 6.00 pm. Open to all boys and girls up to P7. Teams will be selected at the event.


Thursday 26 June    


Loanhead Ex-Servicemen’s Club, Academy Lane, commencing 1.30 pm. Tickets £2. Available from Chrissie Rygula or Annette Perfect (0131 440 1380) or pay on the day.


Thursday 26 June                


Judging will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 26 June. All local shops and businesses are invited to decorate their premises for the Gala Week.


Thursday 26 June    


The Singing Kettle will perform a special Jungle Party show for younger children. Main Stage, Fountain Green, commencing 6.30 pm. Tickets £4 (£2 if purchased in advance of the day of the event). Please refer to the section below for ticket sales information.


Friday 27 June          


Procession from Paradykes Primary School at 10.00 am accompanied by Mactaggart Scott Loanhead Band and the Trinity Occasional Pipers’ Society. At Fountain Green the Court Principals for 2014 will be introduced and musical entertainment featuring Fischy Music will be provided. At 11.45 am the procession will reform and will proceed to the Memorial Park. On arrival at the park refreshments will be distributed to all schoolchildren and to pre-school children holding tickets.


Friday 27 June          


Sports for pre-school and Primary School children. Memorial Park, commencing 1.00 pm. Two roundabouts and Giant Inflatables will be in the park during the afternoon for the free use of children attending the Sports.


Saturday 28 June     


The biggest day in Loanhead’s annual calendar.


Timetable Of Events

8.00 am         Judging of decorated house frontages commences.

10.00 am         Collection of members of the Court from their homes commences.

10.40 am         Collection of Queen Elect from her home at Damhead, followed by the collection of the Retiring Queen from her home in Paradykes Avenue.

11.30 am         The various groups accompanied by the bands move off from St Margaret’s Hall, Clerk Street and proceed by Clerk Street and Church Street to Fountain Green.

11.45 am         Crowning Ceremony on Fountain Green. This will be followed by the Mining Memorial Ceremony.

1.00 pm         The Grand Procession moves off from Church Street and makes its way around the town to the Memorial Park.

1.30 pm         Commencement of Afternoon Programme of Entertainment in the Memorial Park.

3.00 pm         War Memorial Ceremony in the Memorial Park.

5.00 pm         Conclusion of programme of events.

Afternoon Entertainment in the Memorial Park

A wide range of entertainment for all ages will be provided on Children’s Day, Saturday 28 June in the Memorial Park commencing at 1.30 pm. Admission to the park is free. The programme will feature:-

New For 2014 – Wristband Scheme

Wristbands will be on sale in the park from 1.30 pm for £5.00.

The Wristbands will give access throughout the afternoon to a range of attractions and activities. These are currently expected to include:-

3 different Children’s Roundabouts

Various Giant Inflatables including Bouncy Castle, Giant Slide, Dome & Junior Activity Centre

Pony Rides

Climbing Tower

Face Painters

Junior Trampolines


War Memorial Ceremony

The School Queen and other Court Principals will return to the Park at 3.00 pm when the Queen will lay a wreath at the War Memorial in the presence of the Standard Bearers from Loanhead Ex-Servicemen’s Club, Royal British Legion (Women’s Section) and local cadet units and with a suitable musical accompaniment provided by the massed silver bands. Members of the public wishing to attend this ceremony are requested to assemble for 2.45pm.

Sunday 29 June       


In the event that the sports scheduled for Friday 27 June are cancelled due to inclement weather, they will be re-scheduled for Sunday 29 June in the Memorial Park at 2.00 pm.


Tickets & Merchandise

Tickets for the Singing Kettle Show and the Senior Citizens’ Tea Dance, Gala Bag tickets for pre-school and primary school children not attending local schools or nurseries, plus other items such as the Programme Supplement, Bunting, Raffle Tickets and other Gala Merchandise will all be available from our Pop Up Shops.
